The Okinawan Kobudo Doushi Rensei-Kai is an organization of people who pursue maturity of one’s personality through learning Okinawan kobudo.

Doushi: People who have the same will; comrades.

The OKDR exists to continue the teachings of the Matayoshi Lineage of Okinawan Kobudo. When Matayoshi Shinpo Sensei passed in 1997, Gakiya Yoshiaki Sensei was named his successor. Gakiya Sensei went on to form the OKDR in 2002. The association has been presided over by Neil Stolsmark, Hanshi since 2011 and continues to grow worldwide.

The symbol in the center of the crest is called “Hidari Mitsu-Domoe, which symbolizes three souls circling clockwise. This is the crest of Ryukyu (Okinawa) royal families, around which is decorated with nine crowns. The crest expresses the hope that Okinawa Kobudo, the traditional Okinawa martial art, will expand and develop throughout the world.

Our three-year journey with the Okinawan Kobudo Doushi Rensei-Kai has been transformative for both our dojo and instructors. The experience has not only elevated our technical proficiency in kobudo but also strengthened our bond with the global community dedicated to preserving this ancient art. Being part of OKDR has offered us more than just training—it has provided a deeper sense of purpose and connection to the traditions of Okinawa. The guidance and mentorship we’ve received from the leaders of the organization have shaped our teaching philosophy, allowing us to bring the spirit of kobudo into every aspect of our instruction. As our instructors progress through the ranks, their growth reflects the discipline and respect that OKDR instills, and we are proud to continue nurturing these values within our own students.
