Our separate Kobudo program immerses you in the ancient tradition of Okinawan weaponry arts, which predates open-hand martial arts. The Okinawan Kobudo Doushi Rensei-Kai (OKDR) system, founded by Matayoshi Shinpo Sensei and perpetuated by Sensei Yoshiyaki Gakiya and Sensei Neil Stolsmark, teaches the use of 14 different traditional weapons including the bo (staff), sai, tonfa, and nunchaku. This program offers a unique and exciting way to enhance your martial arts journey by learning the historical and practical applications of these weapons.
Training in weapons teaches the critical difference between life and death, emphasizing the deadly potential of weapon movements. Weapons are seen as extensions of the arm, and students practice both empty-hand (karate) and weapon techniques (kobudo). Proper basics are integral to weapon use, so weapons training begins at the 4rd Kyu or when deemed ready by Sensei.
Karate is a lifelong journey of learning and growth. Whether you’re young or old, the lessons you learn in the dojo extend far beyond physical training, impacting every aspect of your daily life.
Karate goes beyond physical fitness; it trains the mind. Joining a dojo is not like joining a health club; it requires a solid commitment to learning and improvement. With perseverance, you will master challenging and complex techniques. After a hard day, there’s nothing quite like coming to the dojo, practicing “mokuso” (emptying the mind), and training to leave the day’s stresses behind. As you train, you’ll gradually understand the deeper philosophical and mental aspects of Karate.
The physical benefits of Karate are significant, but the mental training is even more impactful. It enhances every part of your life, providing clarity, discipline, and a deeper understanding of the world around you. Karate-Do means ‘Empty Hand Way,’ symbolizing a life path that leads to enlightenment. Committing to Karate training can transform your life, offering truly rewarding results.
